ABOUT

Matthew J. McCarthy, MS

Sport & Performance Psychology Consultant

I help coaches build mental strength systems that meet student-athletes where they are — and drive successful seasons through awareness, knowledge, and application.

Education & Psychological Foundations

Leadership Focus

  • Transformational leadership

  • Authentic leadership

  • Servant leadership

Theoretical Foundations

  • General Systems Theory – Humans are complex and interrelated. Teams are ecosystems.

  • Self-Determination Theory – Athletes thrive when relatedness, competency, and autonomy are developed.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Theory – Thoughts create feelings. Feelings drive behaviors.

  • Mental Strength Skills – Performance is maximized when psychological skills are trained intentionally — especially in high-pressure moments.

Master of Science in Sport & Performance Psychology
University of Western States (2025)

Coach Development & Adult Learning

USA Lacrosse Certified Coach Development Trainer (2019–2022)

As a national-level coach developer, I trained coaches using pedagogy and adult learning theory to improve how they teach and lead.

Focus areas included:

  • Guided discovery instruction

  • Gamified practice design

  • Small-sided play

  • Constraints-led coaching

  • Constructive, fact-based feedback

The goal: help coaches move beyond command-style instruction and build learning environments that produce thinking athletes.

Business & Leadership Experience

Sales Director (2006–2020)

Before entering sport psychology full time, I operated a P&L and managed a team of 16 professionals.

This experience shaped my ability to:

  • Define clear competencies

  • Monitor execution and measurable progress

  • Provide constructive, standards-based feedback

  • Build repeatable systems

As Brené Brown says:
“Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind.”

Clarity drives performance — in business and in sport.

Why This Work Matters

Many coaches coach the way they were coached — and unknowingly repeat patterns that limit growth.

When I learned a better way, my relationship with myself and the student-athletes I serve changed permanently.

Everything you need as a coach is already inside you.

My role is to help you:

  • Gain awareness of your strengths and blind spots

  • Build knowledge that aligns with your philosophy

  • Apply skills that create lasting cultural change

Happy players perform better.
Strong relationships drive strong seasons.
Mental strength is trainable.
